This is a very generous collection of major Ravel compositions recorded in 1962 and 1964 and totalling just over 77 minutes. Although Monteux was not involved with the first performances of any of these works the same cannot be said of the following performances over the following decades of which there were very many under his baton.
The LSO famously renewed his contract when he was in his eighties for a repeatable twenty five years. The potential for Monteux to remain the orchestra’s chief conductor until over 130 years of age was more of a statement of respect and support rather than any real wish for such longevity. These five pieces provide a relevant and irrefutable set of examples as to why Monteux was held in such esteem by the players.
Throughout the disc there are innumerable instances where Monteux’s care over clarity and balance within the music pay dividends. This is particularly important when performing the compositions of such a fastidious craftsman as Ravel. Consequently the listener is able to hear, appreciate and savour details that might otherwise go unremarked. The numerous instances of delicate orchestration are treated with the utmost sensitivity and empathy and the climatic points unerringly strike home with bite but without undue heavy weight where that approach would have been at the cost of the above mentioned clarity.
Four of the programmed pieces are very familiar and there are many choices available, not all of the same quality, but there is one piece that is very rarely recorded or played in concert. That is the complete Mother Gosse ballet. This is a short ballet, less than 30 minutes. The more regularly played suite takes about 15-17 minutes but this is at the cost of so much that links the whole piece together. Nowadays the Daphnis suites or Stravinsky’s Firebird suites are by no means as popular as they once were and those full ballets are much to be preferred by collectors. The same logic applies to Mother Goose but even more so bearing in mind the brevity of the whole ballet. This illuminating recording of the complete ballet is worth purchasing the disc alone.
The quality of the recording allows the music to glow and should not be a bar to anyone considering it for purchase. This is yet another outstanding example of Monteux’s art and should be an invaluable acquisition for collectors
