This March, 1975 concert by Karl Bohm and the Vienna Philharmonic from Tokyo has much to commend it. The performances and sharp and clean, tempos relaxed, with the Vienna Philharmonic sounding fabulous. The acoustics are clear and slightly resonant, the bass present, but not overly emphasized. All the inner parts shine through clearly when called for, especially in the contrapuntal parts of the Wagner "Mesitersinger" prelude, and Schubert 8th Symphony.
The Johann Strauss Waltzes: Roses from the south, and Emperor; Die Fledermaus Overture, and Polkas are all delightul and played with the right amount of wit and atmosphere: Romantic light Vienna at it's best! The Perpetual Motion Polka, which ends with the conductor saying "And on and on" or "So on and so forth" or the like, in German or English, here has Bohm saying the words in Japanese, appropo for the audience.
One drawback: there is applause after every work, sometimes for 20 seconds or longer. If this bothers you, avoid this. But, the sound and playing are SO good, I overlook the applause. Karl Bohm and The Vienna Philharmonic at their best. I really enjoyed this alot, and look forward to repeated hearings.
