「ガイーヌ」と並ぶハチャトゥリアンの名作バレエです。奴隷たちの指導者スパルタクスの偉業を題材とした、この「スパルタクス」は、1954年に作曲され、まずは1956年にヤコブソンの振付、その2年後の1958年にモリセーエフの振付で上演されました。しかし、これらはあまり好評とは言えず、その10年後に新たにグリゴローヴィチが振付を行ったヴァージョンが、現在の通常レパートリーとして人気を博しています。有名曲を抜粋した「組曲」も愛好されていますが、ここでは、物語の流れにそった全曲盤をお楽しみください。※C10817-18の新装盤

ボリショイ版の「スパルタカス」がガビッセ版（全曲版）を所有していた。その他、日曜日の21時より放映のNHK「芸術劇場」の録画ビデオで舞台「スパルタカス」のバレエしか全曲版がない！（本当）
輸入盤で全曲なので迷わず購入した。（非常に貴重です）

Fantastic performance and sonics, but "complete" only up to a point

This is now the reference recording of the Spartacus ballet, in splendid digital sound. (I get so tired of the Gayaneh and Spartacus "Suites", even though they were Khachaturian's own idea and probably necessary to popularize his music, since far more people will listen to a few dance numbers than attend a ballet performance of an entire single work.) If you really want to know what Spartacus is all about musically, then this is the recording you have to have, not one of the umpteen recordings of one or another of the suites. The reviews herein state everything you need to know about the fantastic performance and the sonics.

However, another reviewer reviewing a different edition of this same recording on the same label noted that it could not possibly be complete, as there was an earlier recording on five LPs (the number was actually four). I am pleased to provide clarification on this issue. The present recording is "complete" only insofar as it presents the 1968 Bolshoi version choreographed by Grigorovich which made it a worldwide success and by which it is now mostly known. (The liner notes do correctly state that it is the complete Moscow Bolshoi edition.) But it does not contain all of the music that Khachaturian wrote for Spartacus. For that, one must turn to an out of print recording made in the 1970s, featuring the Bolshoi orchestra under the baton of Algis Zhuraitis, who is probably the ultimate champion of this music and has made far more recordings of it (both audio and video) than anyone else, the composer himself included. (Caution: Not every Zhuraitis "complete" audio recording of Spartacus out there is that particular recording.)

That recording is known as "The Complete Spartacus Ballet," sometimes stating that it is the first complete recording, and presents a four-act version of the ballet, with over three hours of music, including four supplementary numbers that were part of the original production but removed thereafter. That version predates the 1968 Grigorovich production. It was recorded by Melodiya in quadraphonc sound and issued in the United States on four LPs on the Columbia/Melodiya label, reportedly with fantastic sonics. It had a brief reappearance on a 3-CD set on Melodiya/His Master's Voice (although downmixed to two channels) which is out of print and pretty much impossible to find. There are used copies of the LP set floating around, and MP3 downloads are available from the usual sources. But there are very few multi-channel recordings of anything by Khachaturian out there, and if the quad sound of this recording of Spartacus is as good as reported, it would be a splendid candidate for a remastering studio to bring out in four-channel SACD format. Hopefully, somebody somewhere will step up to the plate someday, as it would be hard to imagine that such a complete traversal of all the music Khachaturian wrote for Spartacus would be recorded again.

Khachaturian is my favourite classical composer of all time, right from the time I first heard him in the 1950's.
His complete Gayne Ballet on a Russian performance 2 CD set is my favorite of all his music. Spartacus comes second and this recording is no exception. Both are thrilling scores. Full of Armenian melodies, as one would expect from this fantastic composer.
I have most of his works, and play them all often.

Recommend these recordings to any lover of Khachaturian music.
