"Messiah" was presented often during Handel's lifetime, and the composer made changes to suit the occasions and singers available. In 1750, it was presented with the castrato Guadagni in place of a female alto soloist, and given Guadagni's virtuosity (he was Gluck's first Orfeo), Handel embellished the vocal line--the effect is stunning. René Jacobs leads a superb reading of this version of the score--a very secular reading--with swift tempi, lightness of attack, interesting swelling, and diminishing of choral notes to great effect and an overall excellent cast. Countertenor Lawrence Zazzo takes the Guadagni part and fills it with grand style; Kerstin Avemo is the fine soprano soloist and bass Neal Davies sings up a storm. The men and women of the Choir of Clare College are in top form and the 28 players of the Feiburger Barockorchester play with accuracy, verve, and handsome tone. Yes, there are dozens of recordings of this work available, but this one is worthy to stand beside the best. --Robert Levine

衝撃的な名演

録音は、オンマイク気味で残響に乏しい。オケと合唱のアンサンブルは、若干粗い。このメサイアは派手である。しかし、衝撃的な名演といえるだろう。自在な緩急、強弱、テンポの変化は派手であり、同時にクールでもある。つまり、指揮者の解釈は、あくまで、テキストに忠実であり、作為的であるが適切である。この演奏を聴くと、テキストの内容を改めて深く理解できる。

第一部はイザヤ書からの引用が多く、キリスト降誕の喜びの物語である。第二部は詩編からの引用が加わり、受難の物語となり重苦しい。たとえば「He trusted in God that He would deliver Him/彼は神を信じているのだ。そらなら神が助ければいい(詩編22:8)」はマタイ受難曲にも出てくるテキストである。

第一部の喜びを過度に表現した場合、第二部は退屈する。ヤーコプスは、第二部1,2曲目を遅く歌わせているが、その後は、ハレルヤ・コーラスの前"Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron"まで快速に、とばし、第二部を退屈させない。第二部は少し乱暴ではあるが劇的効果を重視。

第三部はコリントのテキストが主で、第二部の興奮を受け、復活の神秘に迫る。1曲目"I know that my Redeemer liveth"で第二部の興奮が冷める。

使用された版は、1750年にヘンデルによって指揮されたもの。独唱の担当は独特である。第一部、最後の"He shall feed His flock like a shepherd"の二重唱をアルトとカウンターテナーに歌わせている。

独唱陣は素晴らしい。

派手でエキサイティングな中に、緻密に計算された知的演奏。そしてキリストへの賛美に溢れる。2006年録音。SACD盤もあり。

ソプラノ・Kerstin Avemo、メッツォソプラノ・Patricia Bardon、カウンターテナー（アルト）・Lawrence Zazzo、テナー・Kobie van Rensburg、バス・Neil Davies。コーラスはケンブリッジ（イギリス）のクレアカレッジの合唱団。

フライブルグが他のバロック・オーケストラと違うのは序曲で良く分かる。微妙な音程の扱い方でより「完全」なハーモニーを作り出している。それから大胆な装飾音の弾き方。例えばメサイアではなく他のもっと知名度の薄い曲を聴いていたなら気が付かなかったかもしれないが、私はイギリス系のもっとストレートなメサイアの演奏を良く聴いていたため、装飾がかなり華美だと思った。そうつまり、独特な音程と装飾が特に他と違うと気付いた点。それに伴いテンポが速めであったり曲の山場や終わり近くで緩急を良く着けていることも特色。

フライブルグ・バロックの1987年の創立時の使命文が「バロック音楽を新しい音で生き生きとした音楽に蘇らせる」（Wikipedia)ことらしいから、特にドイツのオケだからといってドイツ式にこだわる訳ではないようだ。クレアカレッジのコーラスと共演していることも、いくらか個性はあるにしても、とりあえずは純粋にイギリス流のメサイアをやろうということなんだろう。「新しい音」だということは良く理解が出来る。メサイアでこのような演奏を聴いたことは無い、と思った。音程のことを話したが、曲全体としてよりも、細かく詳細を聴いていると、ポイントポイントで、面白いハーモニーの部分をピックアップして目立たせたりしている。こういった「今まで誰も気付かなかった」かなり美しい部分や実は重要であったのかも知れない箇所にスポットライトを当てることで、非常に面白いし、何度も聴きたいと思う。バロック音楽を「蘇らせている」という行為をある意味しっかりこなしているような気がする。「ああ、ここのハーモニーがこんなに正確に弾かれてるのを聴いたことはない」と、何箇所かで気付いた。

装飾やテンポの扱いについて。テンポは速く、オケのトゥッティの部分などは合奏協奏曲のように聞こえなくもない。例えば Every Valley のイントロはオーケストラが非常に活き活きとした演奏をする。曲の中盤でも非常に活発に強弱やジェスチャーを付け、かなり激しくテナーの歌に装飾を付けていく。これに慣れるには時間が掛かりました。しかし、アリアの伴奏であるオーケストラが歌の表現を能動的に装飾することは、歌の意味を引立たせる良い効果もありますが、歌手が伝えようとしているもっと「生」な意味が半減してしまうということも同時に感じました。もうちょっと歌手中心に歌わせた方が、自然に歌詞の意味が出てくることもなかろうか、とは感じました。それはイギリス流のストレートなメサイアを聞くと分かると思います。「新しい音で蘇らせる」という演奏はとても素晴らしいとは思いますが、例えば初めてメサイアを聴く人がもしこの演奏を聴いたらどういう印象になるのか、少し不安があります。

色んな論議は出てきますが、他に無いものを提供してくれている件、そして演奏の質自体は素晴らしいこともあり5つ星です。

This is the ‘Guadagni’ version of Messiah, adapted by Handel in 1750 to showcase the alto castrato Gaetano Guadagni, the future creator of l’Orfeo ed Euride of Gluck. In this performance however evey soloist is a star. Jacobs uses sharp attacks to transform familiar numbers, such as ‘Why do the Nations’ and ‘But who may abide’, into virtuostic pieces. Countertenor Lawrence Zazzo sings Guadagni’s parts with great aplomb. He makes a virtuostic run at “But Who May Abide the Day of His Coming”. Davies executes beautiful melismas in the middle section of “The trumpet shall sound”. The Choir of Clare College is fresh with a youthful cleaness and is uncharacteristically flamboyant, particularly in the ‘Hallelujah’ chorus. The Freiburger Barockorchester give an electrifying performance, where the pace is sometimes breathless at a very fast pace. Jacobs uses a tight fierceness with marked tension that creates marked tension between the performers, sometimes the pace is even too much for the soloists who seem on the edge of their ability to sing so fast. In summary a highly stylized and virtuostic theatrical performance, occasionally with very impressive showing off on the soloists part, at the expense of emotional sincerity. Sometimes however the dynamics, seemingly arbitrary tempi and phrasing and some of the ornaments and expressive gestures and mannerisms are not altogether pleasing. Virtuostic theatrical with sometimes annoying mannerisms. Recommended.

Caposaldo del repertorio oratoriale ma non il capolavoro di Handel nel genere superato almeno dal Solomon e dagli ultimi oratori come Theodora. L'esecuzione è mirabile, tempi rapidi ma flessibili, continuo meraviglioso con uso di tiorba e organo, coro inglese di rara potenza e precisione. I solisti sono buoni: Davies il migliore.

Handel continually revised Messiah--sometimes to make improvements, sometimes to suit individual performers or occasions. This recording recreates the version of 1750, which included revisions inspired by a new member of his cast, the alto castrato Gaetano Guadagni. Handel composed three new arias for Guadagni: "But who may abide the day of his coming," "Thou art gone upon high" (both previously assigned to bass or soprano), and "How beautiful are the feet." All of them are more florid than their predecessors, and the soloists here add a bit of ornamentation to some of the other arias as well, reflecting the conductor's view of Messiah as "a work of `entertainment'" as well as emotional impact. The Clare College Choir is excellent. Fanfare's reviewer calls these discs "sharply recorded, exquisitely presented and scrupulously detailed . . . , replete with Jacobs's trademark swiftness and precision."

We are blessed with many fine recordings of Messiah, including this one. It is the only recording that I know of the 1750 version. It joins my other favorites--the John Butt performance of the 1742 Dublin premiere Messiah - George Frideric Handel, Dublin Version 1742 , the Marriner performance of the 1743 London version Handel - Messiah / Ameling · A. Reynolds · Langridge · Howell · Marriner , and the pathbreaking Hogwood performance of the 1754 Foundling Hospital version Handel - Messiah / Nelson, Kirkby, Watkinson, Elliott, Thomas, AAM, Hogwood .

Listeners need to be aware that Jacobs' approach is not to everyone's taste. The Classics Today review concludes, "Ultimately the overtly dramatic gestures come across as contrived and obvious rather than well-integrated and ingratiating." Jacobs' well-known (and sometimes unfortunate) tendency to fiddle with Handel's scores is most evident in several bars of noodling by the organ that he adds between "If God be for us" and the final "Worthy is the Lamb/Amen" chorus. Slightly annoying, and certainly quite unnecessary, but not a spoiler for me.

Der "Messiah" von Händel braucht keine Rezension - er ist ein meisterwerk des Barock und der Musikgeschichte überhaupt. Es gibt aber sehr unterschiedliche Aufnahmen, und die vorliegende von Rene Jacobs gehört zu den hörenswerten.

Le Messie est une œuvre magique, dont la beauté ne devrait échapper à personne. Très accessible, Le Messie constitue un véhicule idéal pour s'initier à la musique lyrique religieuse. Pour les amateurs, il constitue une source inépuisable de plaisir. J'en possède quatre interprétations, dont celle-ci, et celle de Gardiner souvent citée comme référence. Je trouve cette version par René Jacobs tout aussi bonne que celle de Gardiner, même s'il y a des différences notables. Difficile de dire celle que je préfère entre les deux ! Disons, que celle de Gardiner, sans que ce soit un jugement de valeur, a un côté plus lissé, plus éthéré. Peu à redire sur cette version de Jacobs, de grande qualité sur tous les plans. Le choeur est magnifique, d'une grande lisibilité malgré l'effectif. L'orchestre est parfait. Les solistes sont aussi très bons. Aucun ne démérite de mon point de vue, contrairement à ce que j'ai pu lire ou entendre à propos de cette version. Bref, une version de très grande qualité, très recommandable.
