Since its discovery in the National Museum of Prague and subsequent authentication in the early 1960s, the Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major has wasted no time endearing itself to both virtuosi and the public alike... Although they share the same fast-slow-fast movement structure, Haydn's cello concerti have two quite different personalities. The great Concerto in D Major remains one of Haydn's most lyrically expressive works. The cello is the nucleus and leader of the whole ensemble; the passagework for the solo instrument is bravura and ingenious; yet much of the concerto seems almost wistful in nature and more concerned with expression than flashiness. The C Major Concerto, on the other hand, is all smiles. Mr. Starker describes it as being "among the purest music Haydn ever wrote."

　バッハやコダーイの無伴奏チェロ組曲の演奏で有名なスターカー門下からは、堤剛をはじめ多くのチェリストが育っていますが、コンサート・ツアーのかたわら公開レッスンやセミナー、レクチャーなどを行ってきた教育者でもあります。彼の『チェロ・メソード』は多くのチェロ奏者を啓発する名書と言われています。惜しくも本年、2013年4月28日にインディアナ州の自宅で死去しました。88歳でした。
　多くのチェロ協奏曲を録音していますがマーキュリー・レーベルからリリースされたドボルザークのチェロ協奏曲は演奏・録音共に素晴らしいもので愛聴SACD/CD hybrid盤の一つです。さて、このCDにはハイドンのチェロ協奏曲１番と２番が収録されていて、録音状態は良好です。演奏は正確無比なのですが、地味に、あまり歌うことなく演奏しています。たぶんチェロ教育の教科書として御手本を示すために演奏したものではないかと想像しています。とても及ばないことですが、まずここまで基本を弾けたらと思う、雲の上の高い演奏レベルです。

Starker is pure, elegant and perfect playing. Not super fast and dry as Yo Yo,
no technical imperfections as Rostropovich, no over sentimentality as Harrell. 5 stars!
Starker was 62, not 81 as one gentleman said in his review, when he made this record. Not true!

Thanks to the previous reviewers who recommended this excellent recording. Their advice was certainly worth following. Haydn is a marvellously inventive and accessible composer and this Starker recording of his cello concertos is very rewarding and satisfying. Recommended for all those who do not require period instruments to enjoy early Classical era music. It also represents very good value for money.

Another stellar performance by Janos Starker who, in my opinion, has been rightfully called "the king of cellists." When you consider that Starker was 81 when this was album was recorded in Scotland (in 2005), his palying is all the more impressive. Haydn's two cello concerti are captured in an excellent recording and Starker's playing forms the nucleus and focus of the second concerto. A strong recommendation for both Haydn and Starker fans.
