TELARC CD-80086。このCDは雑誌｢AV FRONT｣(すでに廃刊)にオーディオ評論家故長岡鉄男が紹介していたと記憶している。以前にも持っていたが手放したので再購入。曲はGERSHWIN、GROFEともに有名でコメントの必要はないと思う。と言うか、クラシックの曲目･演奏などに暗いのでコメントのしようがない。肩肘張らず楽しめる。GERSHWINの4曲目｢Hurricane｣。はたと気づいたのだがこの二人の選曲というのは｢嵐｣つながりと言うことか。オーディオマニアの聴き所は12曲目雷の生録。雨がなく平地での録音というのは難しく、83年の録音はアリゾナ。また、86年にユタの高速道路でタイミング良くデジタルレコーダーを持っていて録音。大音量再生するとちょっと心拍数が上がる。イラストはEd Sobieraj。余談だが、NHK BSハイビジョンでオーストラリア北部の雷を追いかけた番組をやっている。

The recording of Catfish the thunder of Grand Canyon suite. Make s it very enjoyable listening.
The arrangement of Erich Kunzel in the performance was outstanding. As an audiophile it's a classic show pieces to
demonstrate the system reproduction, like so much of the Telarc recording.

Finding good Grofe recordings is difficult, and most of those you can find are of the Grand Canyon Suite. It's a lovely piece of music, but can be done in many ways, some new and bo0ld, some routine and drab. Kunzel's series of CDs for Telarc tend not to be too bold in any of the works he's produced, being more "safe" than anything, while at the same time emphasizing the bass drum sounds Telarc became famous for.

This is an older recording, released on CD back in 1987. I can't recall if there was an LP release of this as well, but scou8ring my LP shelves I can't find it so either I lost the LP somewhere along the way, or it was never released in that format. This CD combines two popular works: of course there's the Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofe, in a good but routine recording compared to some of the other recordings on the market, and the Gershwin Catfish Row Suite (from Porgy and Bess). Again, a fairly safe, routine interpretation of Catfish Row. However, don't take ":routine" or "safe" as negatives (at least not too much!). It depends what you're looking for: having heard these pieces many times, I always hope for something new, perhaps a bit edgy, although the vast majority will prefer safe and routine!

And these are well-engineered versions of both works, with the usual Telarc high quality recording techniques and emphasized bass notes. Add to that the popular Cincinnati Pops sound, lush and embracing, along with Kunzel's usual excellent conducting of the works, and you've got a solid recommendation. If you have no other versions of either works, you'll find these delightful.

La suite Grand Canyon de F Grofé ne fait pas l'unanimité. Certains la qualifie de musique pour "bobos". D'autres comme moi l'apprécient grâce à certains thèmes bien composés qui rappellent irrésistiblement les grands espaces américains.
Intéressant complément avec quelques extraits de Porgy and Bess de Gershwin.
Mais c'est bien sûr le côté spectaculaire des prises de son Telarc et d' Erich Kurzel qui rend ce disque encore plus intéressant.
Attention la dernière piste mixte la musique de Grofé à un orage véritable qui arrive soudainement au bout de quelques minutes à un tel niveau (naturel) que des enceintes pourraient être détruites. Attention la première fois de l'écouter à niveau faible pour bien mesurer ce qui est acceptable pour l'installation

Another great TELARC release from Erich Kunzel (Conductor), Cincinnati Pops Orchestra; As I said in the title I purchased this CD for Grofé's Grand Canyon Suite tone poem. I consider this one of the best releases of this best know of Grofé's works. You can listen to the samples here I can tell you Erich Kunzel does an excellent job of conducting this work. He conducts it as Grofé' did, one of my pet peeves with this work is the track On The Trail, properly conducted the meter should give you the visualization of mules plodding down the trail into and out of the Grand Canyon some conductors insist on conducting this too fast thus ruining this image in your mind. There is always a warning on TELARC recording about the dynamic of the recording in this case it is because of digitally recorded thunder storms.
