Five stars for all those Planets!

Five stars for pre-electric recordings made in the mid 1920's? Absolutely, and if you can find a copy of this disc at a good price on Amazon buy it. The performances are first-rate. The music is conducted with great energy and panache by the composer and Alan Sanders' characteristically expert and informed booklet explains that these acoustic recordings represent Holst's work better than his slightly later electrical recordings of some of the same pieces especially The Planets. Holst did not enjoy making records and in addition to the fact that at the time he made the electrical recordings the new process was somewhat hit and miss in terms of sound quality, the composer appeared to lack the energy he gave to the pieces gathered on this disc on the Pearl label.

While it is true that there is a great of crackle and pop, the fact remains that this wonderful music is being performed under the man who wrote it and played with great distinction by among other bands, the London Symphony Orchestra.

Highly recommended.

"The Planets" is the best known work from British composer Gustav Holst. Since it's debut in 1916, the seven part suite has become a standard of the classical repertoire and has been performed and recorded thousands of times over.

With this CD however, we get to hear the very first recording of "The Planets" made between 1922 and 1924 with Gustav Holst conducting the piece himself. There have been numerous opinions posted here already on the sound quality of these recordings. I'll be honest by saying that while the sound quality doesn't match up to todays high-tech standards, the performance itself is timeless. Also, keep in mind that this was recorded during the pre-electrical era in which recordings were made by using acoustical horns to capture the sounds instead of microphones.

As mentioned above, the performance is timeless and powerful. It certainly is something that must have sent shockwaves upon being heard back in 1924. The "Mars", "Mercury" and "Jupiter" movements definitely have defining moments in them despite the primitive methods used to record them. Also, the fact that Holst himself is conducting brings a wealth of authenticity to what's being heard here.

Filling out the disc are three lesser known Holst pieces recorded around the same time period. The "St.Paul's Suite" has a slight Irish/Celtic feel to it while "Beni Mora" has strong orchestral elements reminiscent of "The Planets". The two closing "Songs Without Words" both featuring triumphant melodies especially in the "Marching Song" which has a strong cinematic quality to it.

While this disc is not recommended as a first pick when it comes to buying Holst's "Planets", it is definitely one that's worth owning once you've heard a modern recording of it. This is definitely a fascinating historical document and is a prime example on how the piece should be conducted. The performances themselves are amazing.

I rated this recording as three stars because the document itself is fascinating. The quality however is shocking. In preparing to conduct the Planets myself I fould some interesting answers to questions I had. Be sure to buy a modern day recording along side this one so you see the evolution. I think Bernstein/NY Phil is surprisingly close to the Holst tempi and energy.
