In the early 1990s, Chandos released several rehearsal recordings for a series of live performances of Stravinsky's best music. These are those recordings. But don't be put off. The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande perfectly captures the distinct quirkiness of Stravinsky's music. Everything here is dynamite. Le Chant du Rossignol (1917) is what's left of an opera of the same name, transcribed as Petruscha-like ballet. Also here is the powerful Symphony in Three Movements (1942-43), which mixes dance rhythms with strains of jazz syncopation and the Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra (1949) as popular now as it was then. --Paul Cook
