This is a good performance of the best-known (but not best, IMHO) symphony from the Russian master, extremely well played. My only musical complaint is the controversial and unnecessary acceleration of the symphony's final few bars. We all know what the ending means - I only wish Svetlanov had shown the courage to maintain the slow tempo to the end! It's fake triumph, after all...
It is a truth universally acknowledged that the vast majority of Japanese- originated orchestral recordings tend towards the over-miked, multi-miked and artificially-balanced paradigm. Surprisingly, this very early DSD recording bucks the trend and - in consequence - sounds pretty good.
To my knowledge, this is the only recording of the Festive Overture in high-res sound. That's frankly amazing. Fortunately it's a good one!
