I was curious to hear what the DSD/Blue spec treatment could do for material recorded over 60 years ago. These three well known Respighi performances between 1949-53 by Arturo Toscanini and his NBC Symphony Orchestra were considered to be among his best sonically, although that must be tempered by limitations of recording techniques available at the time. I assume all three selections were recorded in the still new tape medium of the day and that Toscanini's fortissimos sometimes overloaded the medium's capabilities.
Although these recordings still sound dated to me ...the blu spec disc shows very noticeable improvements at certain points. To me the most obvious of these occurred during the Roman Festivals (segment 10) at the sounding of the chimes ,which now has more "character and resonance" than in an earlier Toscanini Collection CD (vol 32) . Just understand that the disc still sounds like it was recorded at the dawn of the tape era.....only now with clearer instrument timbers in softer portions of these scores.
