天才(鬼才？)カルロス・クライバーの面目躍如たるDVDの一枚！！

百聞は一見に如かず。まずは一度、ご視聴あれ！

1996年10月ミュンヘンでの未発表ライヴの映像のDVDである。そしておそらくカルロス・クライバー（Carlos Kleiber, 1930年7月3日 - 2004年7月13日）の最後の勇姿の映像と言えると思う。既に1980年代後半には指揮することが『2・3年に数回』というペースになっていたので、クライバーがどこかのオーケストラを指揮するというだけで大ニュースだったわけで、その中で最晩年の彼の演奏を映像として残せたのというのはほとんど『執念』と言えるだろう。

気がつくのはほとんど譜面台というものを演奏会で使ったのを観たことがないクライバーが譜面台を手元においていることだ。公の場の演奏のラストは、1999年1月から2月にかけてバイエルン放送交響楽団を指揮したのが最後で、晩年は、バレエダンサーの夫人 Stanka Brezovar の故郷スロベニアにて闘病生活（肝臓癌）を送っていて。2003年に夫人を亡くしている。既にこの時かなり体調は良くなかったのだろう。

しかしながらあの神の指揮としか言いようのない『ブラームス：交響曲第4番ホ短調作品98』の指揮ぶりが見られるのである。それ以上何を望むだろうか。あの演奏を聴いたものなら間違いなく手に取るだろう。それだけの価値が充分にあるDVDだと思う。

I am as thrilled by every one of the performances on this DVD, as I am baffled by some of the luke-warm criticism it has received on Amazon.com. Brahms 4th Symphony is unquestionably a major masterpiece, and in Kleiber’s hands it receives the closest I know to a definitive interpretation. Not that Kleiber’s hands are doing all that much. As so often with this laziest of all the great conductors, this musical drill sergeant has done all he has to do in the rehearsal hall, and all that is required in the concert hall is a nod, a wink, or a twiddle of the fingers. I surmise that this is the reason why some of the reviewers equated his simulated lethargy with terminal illness and incipient death. They need look no further than the DVD of his wonderfully indolent 1989 Vienna New Year’s Eve Concert made 6 years earlier to realize that this was his conducting style ----- minimum of effort for maximum of effect. And how brilliantly his Bavarians responded! My decision to buy this product stemmed from ownership of his CD of the work with the Vienna Phil when he was in his prime, and that I have come to regard as the greatest of the many great performances of it that I have heard in 60 years as a serious listener. With eyes closed, I find it almost impossible to decide which is the CD and which the DVD -------- which is the VPO and which the Bavarian State Orchestra, so alike are the interpretations and the performances. Contrary to other reviewers, I consider their string section to be remarkable, and they are never outdone by brass or woodwind or even percussion. A thickly textured supple string tone is maintained throughout, and carries the music forward on a great river of sound.
Beethoven’s Coriolanus Overture is given a more dramatically physical performance by the conductor, who delivers blow after blow upon his cowering players in search of the level of frenzy he desires. In Mozart’s 33rd Symphony, his frantic efforts to hush them further and further allows the magical music of the composer to shine and dance like sunbeams on a lake; only Karl Bohm and Eugen Jochum have ever in my experience come close to Kleiber’s tantalizingly delicate treatment of a Mozart score. Full marks to the back-room boys for outstanding sound and visual quality. This is the Brahms 4th that everyone should have in their collection, irrespective of format. As a complete concert, it is an utter joy.

Fantastisk udførelse af disse værker med Carlos Kleiber . Man mærker fortolkningen meget bedre end hos Karajan.
Så jo Klieber har noget af det der Furtwängler i sine fortolkninger og alligevel er det helt anderledes.
Ligesom det også er med Wilhelm Furtwängler.
Her kan vi dog nyde det i stereo og med billede i farver.
Der er der jo kun Don Giornni DVD i farver og med Wiener Philharmonikerene LIVE.Furtwängler og sangere med stemmer som ikke findes mage til i dag.
