粗野と繊細。剛と柔を併せ持つ稀有な名演です。
激しい曲調はよりワイルドに、静かな曲調はよりロマンティックに。
特に「レズギンカ」の爆速演奏のあとに「仮面舞踏会」の「夜想曲」の
ゆったりした演奏のギャップは、ホントに同じ作曲家のものなのかと疑うほどです。

ハチャトゥリアンに一貫することは「わかりやすい」音楽。
難解なマーラーや複雑なワグナーと違い、ぱっと聴いて
すんなり入ってくる音楽です。
「ガイーヌ」全曲も聴きましたが、楽しい2時間半でした。

まず、アンサンブルをきれいにそろえようという意識が、まったく見られません。1曲目の《剣の舞》からして、オイオイずれてるじゃん、という突っ込みを入れたくなるのですが、その推進力、迫力は前代未聞。《クルドの踊り》は、はじけすぎた感がありますが、《レスギンカ舞曲》はお見事！打楽器の打ち込みが一回多かろうがなんだろうが、お構いなし。これぞ野生の踊りです。《スパルタクス》も《仮面舞踏会》も、そして《コーカサスの風景》もおんなじ調子。
難しいことは言わず、パーッと楽しみましょう。

ハチャトリアンの録音はたくさんありますが、これほど「ギラギラ」した演奏には
そうお目にかかりません。その、原色で描いたような強烈な世界は単純に興奮できます。
ストレス解消になりますよ！

I'm a fan of the music of Aram Khachaturian, especially these performances recorded by the conductor Loris Tjeknavorian with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded at the Aram Khachaturian Hall, Yerevan, Armenia (for those who keep track of such things, that amounts to an Armenian composer, conductor, orchestra and venue).

The (now defunct) CD label ASV issued a total of 9 CD's of Tjeknavorian's performances of Khachaturian music, recorded over the period 1991 through 2000, and one way or another I've managed to pick up all of them over the years. Although no longer available in the current catalogs, each of these releases can be found here on Amazon and with reasonably priced used copies available from various sellers. Here are the listings:

2 - Khachaturian: Symphonies No. 1, No. 3 (simfoniya-poema) - recorded 1993.
3 - Khachaturian: Symphony No. 2, "The Bell", Battle of Stalingrad - recorded 1993.
4 - Khachaturian: The Valencian Widow, Gayaneh; Tjeknavorian: Danses Fantastiques, Suite - recorded 1993.
5 - Khachaturian: Ode in Memory of Lenin, Festive Poem, Greeting Overture, Lermontov Suite, Russian Fantasy - recorded 28 October - 2 November, 1994.
6 - Khachaturian: Spartacus Ballet Suites (nos. 1 to 3) - recorded 1999.
7 - Khachaturian: Piano Concerto, Dance Suite, Waltz & Polka - Dora Serviarian-Kuhn on piano for the concerto; recorded 24-25 October, 1995.
8 - Khachaturian: Film Music - recorded 22-23 October, 1995.
9 - Khachaturian: Three Concert Arias, Ode to Joy, Poem - recorded 2000.

This collection of Khachaturian's music is quite extensive, including all of the symphony works, the various ballet suites and a good selection of his film music. Unfortunately Tjeknavorian did not appear to record Khachaturian's violin concerto, however there are a good many excellent recordings available with other artists and conductors. Altogether the CD's total 9 hours and 39 minutes of very enjoyable music, well performed. All of the CDs include a booklet with an informative essay on the music and performers.

This particular disc includes some of Khachaturian's most familiar music, particularly the famous Sabre Dance from the ballet Gayane. it also includes Tjeknavorian's own Caucasian Sketches. The performances are vibrant and exciting.

Of the best known 20th Century composers, Khachaturian is the only one where you can easily trace his music back to the robust, passionate, soaring and heart tugging musical dramas of his Russian forebears - Tchaikvsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin and, ultimately, Glinka.

Prokofiev is busy and clever. Shostakovich's music, described by one as 'gun metal grey', has its 'Russian' moments - probably after an order, in triplicate, from some apparatchik - but is largely 'modern' and devoid of a distinctive Russian musical heritage, and Rachmaninoff is, well, mostly very strident. It is in Khachaturian's music that you feel the unbridled passion, racing, swirling melodies and reflective moods of the great 19th Century Russian composers. In the hands of Loris Tjeknavorian and the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Khachaturian's musical dramas are vibrantly realised - from the 'Sabre Dance' rattling along at a hundred miles an hour, through delightfully catchy dances to the emotional pinnacle, his best known work, the Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia. If that's not enough, you also get the bonus of Ippolitov-Ivanov's 'Caucasian Sketches', which include an immediately recognizable piece - the rousing 'Procession of the Sardar'.

If you want 20th Century Russian music steeped in the unrestrained passions and melodies of the great Russian composers of yore this disc will not disappoint you.
