競合盤ひしめく「メサイア」の中、ヤーコプスは最高の演奏を届けてくれました。フライブルク・バロック・オーケストラを自在に操りながら、ヤーコプスならでは知的刺激と熱い情熱の入り混じったヘンデルはお見事の一言。ヘンデルの音楽に浸る喜びに溢れています。
　この録音では1750年に上演した時の形態を元にし、ソリストを5人立てています。ソプラノは、スウェーデン出身で、ここ数年猛烈な勢いで人気急上昇のシャスティン・アヴェモ。ヘンデルなどバロック音楽から、「ルル」のタイトルロールまで得意とするユニークな人です。アルトには、充実した深いアルトの美声が素敵なアイルランドのパトリシア・バードン。カウンターテナー、テノールには、ローレンス・ザゾ、コビー・ヴァン・レンズブルクとヤーコプス組というべきお馴染みの面々。バスにはこれもバロックで大活躍のウェールズのバス、ニール・デイヴィスが起用されています。

素晴らしいの一言に尽きます！ピリオド楽器の素朴な音でこんなにも豪快に響き渡るとは！昔、多くの指揮者がモダンオーケストラで行われてきたことが、すべて一新され、これぞ古楽器の醍醐味かと勝手に空想しながら、その世界に酔いしれました。ハレルヤコーラスはもちろんのこと、そこに至るあらゆるアリアやコーラスが、そして最後のアーメンコーラスで止めを刺されたような感じだね！

衝撃的名演。録音は、オンマイク気味で残響に乏しい。オケと合唱のアンサンブルは、若干粗い。このメサイアは派手である。しかし、衝撃的な名演といえるだろう。最もわかりやすく言えば、フルトヴェングラーがメサイアを指揮するとこうなるだろうということである。自在な緩急、強弱、テンポの変化は派手である。同時にクールでもある。つまり、指揮者の解釈は、あくまで、テキストに忠実であり、作為的であるが適切である。この演奏を聴くと、テキストの内容を改めて深く理解できる。 派手でエキサイティングな中に、緻密に計算された知的演奏。
