　ベートーベンの序曲集を欲しかった私が、このCDに決めた理由は、概ね以下のとおりです。

　①　第一の理由は、このCDが、十一あるといわれているベートーベンの序曲の全てを収録したものであったことです。これを確かめるのには少し苦労しました。アマゾンの商品説明には、そのことが明確に記述されておりませんでしたから。何で分かったかというと、ジャケットの写真です。添付資料の写真をご覧ください。この写真を拡大して収録されている曲目を確かめました。
　②　第二の理由は、演奏が、カラヤンとベルリン・フィルによるものだったからです。20世紀後半における世界最高峰の指揮者と世界最高峰の楽団による演奏ですから、素人の私としては、これ以上、何も言うことはありませんでした。
　③　第三の理由は、この演奏が1965年と1969年のものだったことです。この頃は、カラヤンがベルリン・フィルを率いてから、ちょうど10年から15年が経過した頃で、カラヤンとベルリン・フィルとの関係が最盛期にあった頃のように記憶しておりましたので、演奏も最も充実しているのではないかと判断しました。

　以上が、私がこのCDを購入した主な理由ですが、購入して聴いてみた結果はどうだったかというと、素晴らしいの一語に尽きました。ベートベンの序曲がこんなに素晴らしいものだと思ったのは今回が初めての経験でした。CDの帯に「カラヤン＝ベルリン・フィルハーモニーという最高に贅沢な演奏者による（序曲の）全曲録音が残されたことは、二十世紀の音楽史上の大きな財産であると言えましょう」と書いてありましたが、素人なりにそうではないかと思います。ベートーベン好きなら、このCDは、是非とも持っていたい一枚、持っていて損はない一枚、と思います。

高校生のころベートーヴェン全集のLPとして持っていましたが、ＣＤで単体で見つけたので購入しました。この頃のカラヤンは颯爽としてますね。

Enjoyable Karajan Beethoven Overture Performances but more enjoyable Performances are Available

This is a single layer super-high material (SHM) SACD.

As a “single-layer” SACD it is not a hybrid SACD and will not play on a regular CD player.

The SACD contains 11 overtures: Leonore 1,2 and 3; Egmont; Coriolan; Fidelio; King Stephen; Ruins of Athens, Creatures of Prometheus; Consecration of the House; and Namensfeier.

While I enjoy Karajan’s Berlin Philharmonic performances of the Beethoven Symphonies and Overtures, his performances, to my ear, present an overall string heavy, often somewhat undifferentiated – albeit enjoyable – sound at the expense of minimizing or submerging the woodwinds and, to a lesser extent, the brass. Consequently, I cannot recommend this as a first choice for Beethoven Overtures.

Otto Klemperer with the Philharmonia/New Philharmonia Orchestra is my first choice for Beethoven overtures. Klemperer’s performances of the Beethoven Overtures – as well as his performances of Beethoven’s Symphonies – present superb balance among the various sections of the orchestra which, in my opinion, makes for a more enjoyable listening experience. The Overture which I return to most often is the Consecration of the House, Op. 124. The difference between Klemperer’s performances and Karajan’s performance is extreme. Klemperer develops instrumental detail which is largely lost in Karajan’s performances. Klemperer’s Overtures are available – along with his Beethoven Symphony performances – in a 10 CD Box set titled “Beethoven: The Orchestral Recordings: Symphonies And Overtures.” Listeners can find it by searching for ASIN “B008YKRRI6” on the Amazon site. The performances in that box set date from the mid to late 1950s and 1960s. There are multiple versions of Symphonies 3, 5 and 7, as well as Leonore Overtures 1, 2 and 3, the Fidelio Overture and the Consecration of the House Overture. Some of the performances are in mono but there is at least one stereo performance of each Overture and Symphony and the sound quality is, to my ear, excellent. Furthermore, there is the added treat that Klemperer consistently seated his first and second violins on opposite sides.

One note on Klemperer’s performances. Some listeners characterize his orchestral performances as generally “slow.” Listeners who insist on rapid-fire performances like those of John Elliott Gardiner and Ricardo Chailly may be put off by the pace of Klemperer’s performances. To my ear Klemperer knows how he wants to develop each performance and the performance unfolds to bring out details often missing in the performances by some other well-known conductors but his performances rarely drag.

There are two other Beethoven Overture CDs I recommend over this Karajan SACD – albeit while acknowledging that this Karajan SACD is thoroughly enjoyable as long as you like the sound style Karajan produces.

The first, is “Beethoven Overtures” with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. Szell was, in my opinion, one of the greatest Beethoven Orchestral works performers. His Beethoven Overture performances are also available in a hybrid SACD – search for “B01EB6PMFG” on the Amazon site. The only draw-back to this SACD is that it contains only seven overtures: Leonore 1-3; Egmont; Corolian; King Stephen; and Fidelio. While I’ve heard these performances and they are superb and the sound quality is excellent, I did not purchase this SACD because it does not include the Consecration of the House Overture.

The second is “Beethoven: The Overtures” with Claudio Abbado and the Vienna Philharmonic. This CD – which to the best of my knowledge is not available in SACD -- contains eighth overtures: Leonore 1-3; Egmont; Corolian; King Stephen; Fidelio; Creatures of Prometheus; and the Consecration of the House. To my ear Abbado’s performances are superb and he brings out excellent instrumental detail, making this, after Klemperer’s performances, the Beethoven Overture performances I return to most often. I purchased a SHM regular CD version of this CD earlier this year – listeners can find it by doing a search for ASIN “B004MVMLQ4” on the Amazon site. Alternatively, one can search for a regular non-SHM version at “B01GW03KSU.”

One final Beethoven Overture CD set to consider is “Beethoven: The 11 Overtures” with Kurt Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. This is a 2-CD SACD set on PentaTone. This was the first Beethoven Overture CD set I purchased. I enjoyed it, think the sound and performances are very good but after subsequently purchasing the Klemperer and Abbado performances I rarely return to the Masur CDs – not because they are not enjoyable – but because the Klemperer and Abbado performances are more enjoyable.

Overall, listeners who have a strong preference for Karajan’s performances of the Beethoven Orchestral works will likely be extremely pleased with this SACD. As for other listeners who want more instrumental detail (without sacrificing big orchestra sound), I’d recommend Otto Klemperer’s great performances and Abbado’s performances for a second set.

1965年9月＆1969年1月、ベルリン、イエス・キリスト教会での収録。　
こういう序曲集みたいなアルバムを手がけさせれば天下一品の腕の冴えを見せるのが
カラヤンである。流麗にして豪華、キリリと引き締まった、実にスタイリッシュな演奏で、全
盛期のカラヤン＆ベルリン・フィルの実力をよく示したアルバムといえる。音質も上々。
