If Belohlavek has sometimes been accused of being a little too laid back, try this recording of the Sinfonietta, while the Glagolitic Mass if not quite as intense as Ancerl does have gorgeous detail. The soloists do what is required and the choir are very satisfactory. I still have to hear the second disc of the set, but this seems well worth buying, with the added advantage of superb sound - very clear but never shrill and with a believable perspective. This could be the only Janacek orchestral set of recordings you need buy! (The second disc is equally good).

The performances, as expected were superb. My one reservation is the paucity of Janacek's works when indeed there was plenty of room available on disc two!

Their is lots of competition in these recording. However having a Czech conductor lovingly conducting the national orchestra of Czechoslovakian brings out all those little nuances that other recent recordings do not. Decca engineering is also,superb.
