On this CD/SACD "you will have the unadorned pleasure of a performance of his (Mendelssohn's) First Symphony and one that includes both the original Minuet and Trio, and his orchestration of the Octet 'Scherzo' with which he replaced these for London in 1829. That Scherzo was then encored - not surprisingly if the (that) performance was anything like this one. The whole work is delivered with exemplary brio and polish, with strings 99 percent vibrato-less (old habits die hard)...If anything, the virtuosity in this Scherzo is exceeded in that of a 'Midsummer Nights Dream' where John Eliot Gardiner lops off at least 20 seconds from the versions of Claudio Abbado, Charles MacKerras and Seiji Ozawa...But it's Mendelssohn's lyricism that wins out overall: how do you sum up nearly an hour's music with just a slow, high, softly descending E major scale? Genius" (Roger Nichols, BBC Music, April 2017) This listing does not disclose that it contains two discs, one of which is a Blu-Ray video and audio of the performance of the Mendelssohn Symphony No. 1 and the Midsummer Night's Dream, which is absolutely magical. The second disc is a regular audio of these same performances.

J'ai offert ce cd à un passionné de musique et il n'a pas été déçu puisque dans le coffret il y a le cd qu'il peut écouter notamment dans sa voiture et le dvd blu-ray à écouter (excellente prise de son ) et à regarder avec une belle qualité d'image.
Quant à l'interprétation par Gardiner et le" London Symphony Orchestra" elle est parmi les plus réussies ! Quelle légèreté dans le rendu d'orchestration de la célèbre ouverture de cette œuvre écrite faut-il le rappeler par Mendelssohn à l'âge de 16 ans !

This is the best recording of the Mendelssohn 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' music I've ever heard, no doubt helped by the recentness of the performance and the extra audio quality provided by 'Super Audio CD' recording method. I personally would prefer the sections of the work not to be separated by play's dialogue but this seems the normal way of things so I'll have to accept it. Extras are available on the accompanying 'Blue-ray' disc for those who prefer to see the performers.

Ho completato la raccolta delle incisioni di Mendelssohn di Sir JH Gardiner con questo Sogno. Diciamo subito che la mia incisione di riferimento rimane quella di Ozawa, che grazie ad un cast eccezionale (Battle, Von Stade, Dench), lascia qualsiasi concorrente a distanza siderale.
La versione della LSO è tecnicamente all'avanguardia ed ha il pregio di essere fornita in CD, SACD e LPCM/192, quindi con il massimo della fedeltà.
L'esecuzione, dal punto di vista artistico si può considerare tra le due o tre migliori disponibili, eccetto quella inarrivabile del già citato Ozawa.
Raccomandabile, ed ottima per il rapporto Q/P.

Apart from a couple of quibbles with tempo and phrasing this recording is as good as I could expect it to be. I was amazed to find the package included 2 discs.. One was an SACD with excellent resolution. The other was a Blu-Ray again with great surround sound as well as a nicely photographed video of the music as it was recorded. This is one of those occasions when a purchase surprises delightfully with content that exceeds expectations . Did I mention the music is wonderful too?
