On parle peu en France du maestro Guennadi Rozhdestvensky, peut-être en raison de son nom imprononçable , de son côté « anti-vedette », ou tout simplement de son physique tout à fait improbable ? quelle erreur ! Nous avons sur ce DVD l’un des rares témoignages visuels de l’un des derniers représentants d’une génération bénie d’artistes russes hors du commun et surtout géniaux dans tous les sens du terme, formés dans le moule soviétique et comprenant des personnalités aussi éminentes que Richter, Oistrakh, Rostropovitch, Gilels, Kogan , Kondrachine , Sanderling et Mravinsky….excusez du peu et cette liste n’est pas exhaustive ! Avec plus de 200 œuvres à son répertoire, Rozhdestvensky s’est imposé dans le monde en servant souvent les œuvres de Chostakovitch, Prokofiev, Schnittke, Britten, Bruckner, mais aussi celles de nombreux compositeurs soviétiques obscurs et aujourd’hui oubliés. Le présent DVD a été enregistré au cours de deux concerts « proms » londoniens de septembre 1978 et août 1979 alors qu’il était encore directeur musical du BBC symphony orchestra . Le programme en est exclusivement russe. Il nous permet aussi d’admirer l’immense talent de la pianiste Viktoria Postnikova dans le 1er concerto de Rachmaninov dont elle nous livre une lecture profonde et concentrée. Dans la 4ème symphonie de Chostakovitch qui demeure le sommet de ce DVD, Rozhdestvensky exprime pleinement son immense talent caractérisé par un sens naturel de la structure, du rythme et des couleurs . Sa battue est très peu conventionelle : précise et souvent humoristique, parfois drôle et facétieuse même. Sa concentration et sa présence alliées à sa grande connaissance de la partition sont immenses et il n’omet jamais de donner à chaque musicien son départ , surtout s’il est un peu périlleux . Bien qu’il ait en face de lui l’un des meilleurs orchestres du monde, il sait que cette musique demeure difficile et il se souvient qu’elle avait même été jugée » injouable » en 1936 par les autorités musicales soviétiques. Mais avec un tel génie de la communication , tout semble facile. A voir et à revoir notamment pour tous les apprentis chefs d’orchestre lassés des simagrées d’un Barenboim ou des outrances d’un Bernstein.

All three performances come from the BBC Proms, the Rimsky and Rachmaninov from the 1979 season, the Shostakovich from 1978. (An old diary and a programme tell me I was present at the latter prom!)
I seem to recall recently an announcement that the BBC would be making a number of prom performances available on DVD in the future. If true, this is most exciting news. Although every prom gets broadcast on radio, without exception, while I was in the UK, (it may be different now, I emigrated 7 years ago), roughly one prom a week would be televised, so there are riches in store!
These performances come from Rozhdestvensky's tenure as the BBC SO's chief conductor, and Shostakovich's 4th Symphony is played with far greater security than one might have anticipated, particularly the manic 1st movement fugue. Not a work any orchestras, even Russian/Soviet ones, would have been playing with any frequency. My copy had a brief moment of audio 'drop-out' about 21 minutes into the first movement, followed by one more, a couple of minutes later. Also, from the Menu I could of course choose which of the three pieces to play, but within a work I couldn't choose a movement, which was irritating. (My machine, my disc? I don't know). The 4th Symphony plays 63 minutes, and score in hand, I wanted today to just listen to the last movement, so I was forced to use the FForward button all the way from the start of the symphony.
Minor points in my view. There are too few Shostakovich symphonies on DVD, - 1st 5th 6th and 9th from Bernstein, the 10th from Kogan, and on Japanese DVDs I also have Mravinsky's 5th 8th and 12th, and Svetlanov's 5th and 6th, so to have the 4th in an excellent performance is wonderful! Pictures and sound are excellent too. The Rimsky-Korsakov must have sounded fantastic 'live' in the spacious Royal Albert Hall, still pretty good on this DVD.
Postnikova's Rachmaninov 1st Concerto is brilliantly played. She was a frequent visitor to London of course at this time. I occasionally felt the piano to be slightly 'under-recorded' in comparison to the orchestra, but this can often be the impression when we are given big close-ups of the pianist's hand during big tuttis. I shall welcome other reviewers' opinions on this!
A big, big welcome to this programme, and I hope the BBC can find the Prom 'Leningrad' televised 8 or 9 years ago, particularly as I no longer have my off-air VHS....memory suggests it was either Gergiev or Temirkanov at the helm. Often they filled the Prom interval with a relevant 30-minute documentary on the main work, so I hope they consider including that, as the did with their DVD of Elgar's 'Gerontius' from St Paul's Cathedral.

A wonderful disc of great music and equally great music-making. I only wish that they had been more generous with tracking--you only get one track per piece of music so it's very tedious to get to a specific point on the disc.

L'oeuvre vers laquelle je me suis dirigé en achetant ce DVD est exclusivement la Quatrième de Shostakovich: Rojdestvensky nous en livre ici une interprétation qui fait référence. Nous ne sommes pas très éloignés de la lecture qu'en donnait Kondrashin dans son enregistrement de 1962 à la tête de son orchestre de Moscou. Nous sommes ici en face de la plus belle version "récente" de cette symphonie majeure. Tout ici est limpide, clair, lisible. L'orchestre est splendide et semble avoir intériorisé cette partition complexe (contrairement à d'autres orchestres occidentaux). La prise de son est très belle et équilibrée. Bref, un moment musical d'une rare intensité à consommer sans modération. Par ailleurs, et c'est certainement là un commentaire très accessoire, voir Rojdestvensky au pupitre réserve quelques surprises: sa battue, totalement différente de celle de nos chefs occidentaux et mettant l'accent sur l'expressivité de la musique plutôt que sur la mesure elle-même, a de quoi surprendre!

Ce disque est un "must have" incontestable. Si on aime Shostakovich, on ne peut s'en priver!! Se pose alors une question: à quand une version "remasterisée" du merveilleux enregistrement de Kondrashin (1962) chez Melodiya??
