When I was a small child during the sixties, music wasn’t as instantly available as enjoyed these days. Listening to an album entailed Mom searching through a shelf of disks, squinting at the tiny letters on the back of thin LP sleeves, carefully extracting the delicate vinyl or lacquer disk, positioning it on the turn table, waiting for the tube amplifier to warm up, then sitting back for 20 minutes or so of wonderful enjoyment as each side of the LP played. Music was a special treat, enjoyed once every week or so by my mother’s side. This piece by Smetana was one of Mom’s favorites, and as a result, I got a healthy dose of these wonderful strains. I remember sitting on the floor in front of my father’s 22 inch woofer on many occasions, my mouth open, tongue stuck out, feeling the bass rattling my rib cage as Ma Vlast sounded through the house—I probably wasn’t much bigger than the speaker. It gave me goose bumps at the time, and still does today.
I forgot about this piece as over forty years passed. Then one day while getting ready for work, I heard the lovely strains of these melodies on the radio. Tears welled in my eyes as musical memories washed through me. I rushed to the internet to find out what was playing, then immediately got a copy for my Ipod. Currently, I have three separate versions of this work, one by Rafael Kubelik and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, one by James Levine and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and this one by Theodore Kuchar conducting the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra. Of the three, this one is by far the most inviting recording. The production puts you right inside the orchestra, surrounded on every side by the instrumental groups as though you were a member of the orchestra. The interpretation is impeccable, very soulful and heartfelt as though the musicians were living the music, not just doing a job. The ambiance of the hall is nicely present without being overbearing. This version brought back the joy of those happy childhood days listening to music with my mother.
