今回他の演奏を聴いてみて、予想はしていたもののやはりデュトワがニュアンス、詩情等においてベストに近い出来だと思った。ビーチャムは説得力はあるが詩情に欠け、アンセルメもなかなかいいがデュトワに比べるとこれも詩情、雰囲気に不足している。往年の名演のクリュイタンス盤は素晴らしいが、雰囲気、柔らかさ、音楽的流れはデュトワが勝っている。本曲を３０種集めている御仁は、パスカル・トリトリエをベストに挙げているが、未聴。故宇野氏はレーグナーをベストに推薦していたが、私はニュアンスの豊かさ、響きの柔らかさでデュトワを採りたい。このデュトワ盤を知人３人に贈ろうと思っている。

When it comes to Georges Bizet's music, more is more. This two-CD set provides the most. In my other Bizet CD, a very good one, as well, there are tasty excerpts of Bizet's "Carmen" and "L'Arlesienne Suites" but I always felt that there was a lot missing. In this Decca recording, the music is all there. In addition, there is Bizet's lush and melodious Symphony in C, as well as some less renowned but very worthy pieces. Charles Dutoit, conducting the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, has always been a master in interpreting the great French composers. This is a fantastic recording.

These two discs were recorded in 1986 and 1995 during Charles Dutoit's long spell as artistic director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. During that time they made many outstanding recordings with a particular reputation for French and Russian music and a glorious sound recorded in Saint-Eustache church. That word glorious refers to a warm and deep sound which can be heard on both these discs: it offers great clarity for solo contributions, and still sounds very good today.
As to the music it is brimful of attractive melodies, indeed the only downside of the discs is that the Carmen suites are so full of singalong tunes well known from the opera that it's tempting to sing along rather than listen. Dutoit is an ideal conductor for Bizet's music, sufficiently romantic to bring out its drama without letting it become self-indulgent. Highly recommended, with each disc offering 72 minutes of melodic delight.

Bizet is known for Carmen and Carmen Suites, etc., but his Symphony in C, especially the adagio, is a wonderful musical experience. A great recording for one's classical library.

Esecuzione esemplare delle celebri Suites bizetiane, ben assecondata da un'eccellente registrazione. Dutoit, alla guida della "sua " Orchestra di
Montreal, offre nel secondo cd, oltre alla splendida " Sinfonia in Do ", pagine di raro ascolto come l' " Ouverture " e " Patrie ". Pubblicazione godibilissima, da consigliare caldamente.
