MAGICAL! GREAT SOUND AND BEAUTIFUL PLAYING.

One ordinary day back in High School, I walked into the music room to see what my former music teacher was up to. I opened the door and I heard this loud, beautiful sound from a large orchestra playing something I've never heard before. I asked him what the hell he was listening to, and he pointed to the blackboard where he had written; NIELSEN Symphony no.4 IV Con Amina - Allegro. He told me he's recorded it the night before while listening to the radio and couldn't stop playing it. At first I was skeptical, but soon I became overwhelmed by this powerful, exhilarating music full of drama and instrumental colors. Later I discovered Nielsen's 5th which seems like a continuation of the 4th in terms of drama. Blomstedt and the SFS are superb in this recording. If you love Nielsen, or you're just discovering this unique composer, this a must have collection.

Top Drawer Nielsen

I had managed to avoid Blomstedt's SFS Nielsen cycle for decades. A knowledgeable friend suggested I acquire them and his advice was good! These are splendid performances. I particularly like the 5th, but the 4th and 6th Symphonies are also well done. Orchestral playing and sonics are outstanding throughout. These recorded performances are a great tribute to the veteran conductor's tenure in San Francisco.
While I value the conductor's earlier symphony cycle on EMI, these recordings are more energetic and seem to me to have a greater level of commitment. Sonically, DECCA takes the palm!

Tough competition from the later symphonies

Herbert Blomstedt’s two volumes of Carl Nielsen’s symphonies, with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra from the late 80’s and early 90’s, have since been collected together in a box set
on Decca
. The bonus orchestral works have also been carried over into that set, items that make Blomstedt’s Nielsen cycle most attractive.
Carl Nielsen’s ebullient early symphonies 1-3, ones of short, tuneful melodisms, are greatly contrasted with the strife and modernism of his later symphonies. The 4th is a wonderful transition and shows great invention, such as the wonderful chamber features in the middle movements. The fifth and sixth please me less, they are not necessarily off-putting and I enjoy the lyricism in the 5th, but Nielsen expands his harmonic language towards wartime modernism.
Blomstedt’s vision of Nielsen is marked for its forward motion and bustling energy. The San Francisco SO is crystal cut in its execution, which serves this modern-sounding music well. The Humoresque 2nd mvt. of Sym. 6 is astounding for example, showing the fine instrumental abilities of San Francisco, and Decca’s sonics capture everything with pétillant clarity.
The treasure of Blomstedt’s Nielsen symphony cycle are the bonus works. In volume 2, the dainty Little Suite for Strings and the 20-minute cantata Hymnus Amoris. The 15-minute Suite for Strings is a slight work, showing the leaner strings of the Danish NRSO under Ulf Schirmer, ported over from Decca . Hymnus Amoris, with the same orchestra, follows the human expanse of time, and is a wonderful work. Soprano Barbara Bonney is particularly delightful, as are the adult and children’s choruses.
There is a lot of competition with Nielsen’s later symphonies on record. Ormandy/Bernstein on Sony are classics, Kubelik in the 5th on EMI , Kondrashin on Philips in the 6th as well, and fine sets from Rozhdestvensky on Chandos and Sakari Oramo on Bis, among many others.
Still, Blomstedt’s are a solid set, full of energy and momentum, in excellent Decca sound. I am not as taken with Nielsen's later symphonies as others, I find their modern language walking away from what I enjoyed of his earlier symphonies, but these are fine performances nonetheless. Recommended.
