This is a re-release of the original recording and I selected to buy it because of the excellent overall skill of Pletnev and the high quality of the recording. The piano is principally on the right channel and orchestra clearly spread out in the correct positioning for nice stereo separation effect, as you would hear if you were right there. I have read several, not so positive, reviews of this recording, but mine is very good and it's a worthy addition to my collection. I like the piano artistry equally with that of my original Van Cliborn recording that didn't have the better quality of stereo. The piano artistry is distinct with excellent reproduction of the wide range of frequencies that instruments can produce but such skillful playing. I will enjoy this recording many times and I recommend it. 4/10/15. THIS RECORDING IS SOO GOOD I MISTAKENLY BOUGHT A SECOND COPY, FORGETTING THAT I ALREADY HAD IT IN MY PERSONAL LIBRARY. Buying used copies it the best way when possible. Saves a lot of $$$. I guess I do have good tastes in music. I know what I like, even if it's duplication errors.
Need to spend some time listening to it aside from doing something else as the dynamic ranges are quite wide. Not ideal for in the car unless the volume is up high which means the louder sections are a bit too heavy.
TCHAIKOVSKY wrote three Piano Concertos and Several Symphonies and Orchestral Works.
HE never could produce a "Pure Symphonic Music" and most of his Orchestral Music could be best described as "Symphonic Poems", suitable more for Ballet than Pure Orchestral work.
AS for his Piano Concertos, No. 1 is the most popular one, however his lesser known Piano Concerto No. 2, is his best Orchestral Music.
AND the reason it is not performed often is that aside from the fact that you need a Premium Piano Virtuoso, you also need a similar Caliber Violinist, Cellist, and a host of Master Wind Instrumentalists.
THIS recording is the Ultimate Production for Tchaikovsky's Piano Concertos, being performed by Mikhail Pletnev, best Russian Pianist since Rahmaninov, Conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev the foremost expert on Tchaikovsky and world renowned Philharmonia Orchestra that Celebrates his Music.
