Antal Dorati's performance of Appalachian Spring is the most beautiful on disc. There are other performances that have a more rustic character, or perhaps a sharper rhythmic definition, but none have such purity and innocence. It's certainly not the only way to conduct the ballet, but on its own terms, the music simply shines. The remaining works range from the incredibly popular Rodeo music (better known as the music from the beef commercials) to the early but exciting Dance Symphony. All of them have been extremely well recorded, and Dorati's expertise as a ballet conductor ensures that the performances are completely idiomatic. --David Hurwitz

Antal Dorati and the Detroit Symphony recorded Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” Suite in digital sound in the early 1980s. Tempos are sensible, Dorati lets the music unfold naturally and Copland is heard afresh;
I have other Appalachian Spring Suites by
Bernstein/New York (Sony); Steinberg/Pittsburgh Symphony (MCA);
Copland/London Symphony (CBS)
Slatkin/St. Louis Symphony (EMI)
and Dorati’s compares well with all of them. Fanfare for the Common Man, Dance Symphony, Rodeo Suite and El Salon Mexico make for an excellent program of Copland’s famous works. Highly recommended.

Here's the story: I was looking for some better recordings of Copland's work to replace old tapes. Amazon gave me plenty of choices, and I bought two CDs together (the other a compilation of various composers). When it came to auditioning them, I began with the Fanfare for the Common Man, but didn't pay much attention to which of the CDs I had loaded. Right from the opening bars (timpani, bass drum, tam-tam) the immense sound convinced me that this must be the TelArc CD of the Cincinnati PO under Eric Kunzl... WRONG!

Copland was a great composer for large forces, and in my opinion you should get a performance which does justice to that. This CD does that in spades! It is faultlessly clear and very realistic: I can say no more.

Performances by Antal Dorati really need no plaudits from me: his work and reputation speak for themselves. I just don't think you can go far wrong with anything he does, unless maybe you are ultra pedantic about tempi or tiny details.

This is an excellent choice of Copland works. Only the "Dance Symphony" failed to enthrall me completely: this is a work less often performed than the others, and has the feel of something produced by grafting at the office desk, with the Muse playing hide-and-seek, rather than something truly inspired. Nevertheless it deserves a listening (he said condescendingly!).

I later played the Fanfare back-to-back with the TelArc recording. There were plenty of differences, mostly a matter of orchestral balance and timbre, but though TelArcs trademark deep full bass and huge dynamic range are in evidence here, it is the Decca recording which sounds more like the real thing in the context of a typical listening room (which I believe I have).

Take a bow all who were involved in this wonderful offering!

La "Dance Symphony" fut écrite à partir d'un matériau thématique préalablement conçu en 1922-25 pour le ballet "Grohg" (inspiré du film "Nosferatu" de Murnau) qu'Aaron Copland (1900-1990) composa pendant sa période parisienne.
Le style mordant et les harmonies caustiques de ce triptyque semblent influencées par Prokofiev et l'Ecole d'Arcueil.

Le reste du programme illustre deux tendances de l'esthétique musicale du compositeur dans les années 1930-40 : un langage simple qui parle au plus grand nombre (l'édifiante "Fanfare for the common man" en est l'exemple) et l'inspiration folklorique.

Constitué des souvenirs d'un premier séjour dans la capitale hispanique, "El Salón México" puise aussi son charme dans des recueils de mélodies traditionnelles.
C'est la vie des ranchs et des cow-boys qui s'exprime dans les « four dance episodes » tirés du ballet "Rodeo". Tandis que "Appalachian Spring" nous ramène au temps de la conquête de l'Ouest : « les noces d'un couple de pionniers, au printemps autour d'une ferme nouvellement bâtie dans les collines pennsylvaniennes au début du XIX° Siècle » tel que Copland décrivit cette oeuvre scénique commandée par la chorégraphe Martha Graham.

Pour le label Mercury, Antal Doráti avait déjà gravé ce répertoire à Londres et Minneapolis.
Le présent album réédite quelques enregistrements réalisés au début des années 1980 avec le Symphonique de Detroit.
Superbement capté par les micros de Decca, l'orchestre se montre moelleux et coloré à souhaits. La vigoureuse baguette du maestro hongrois apporte à ces oeuvres l'alacrité rythmique qui en exalte les saveurs.

Auprès des disques fondamentaux de Leonard Bernstein (CBS et DG), voilà une enthousiasmante introduction pour découvrir ces superbes pages de la musique américaine.
